Thought I'd give you the "scoop" on what an (approximate) $2500 budget can really get for you these days. $2500 is the average 5-7 day vacation budget for two people, looking for a beach vacation. I am going to give you the typical comparison; Hawaii vs. Mexico. From Phoenix, AZ....where most of my clients reside.

Hello Fellow Travelers! I am sure you will be taking part in a vacation of some sort (see my 6 Amazing Honeymoon/Vacation Specials under $2600 for two below!) this summer or fall! So, I thought perhaps some travel tips would come in handy. If you have questions or need advice (in addition of course to booking your trip) please feel free to contact me. I am more than happy to offer some information or suggestions. Have a great summer and Happy Traveling!

Suitcase Tip:
Pack a dryer sheet in your suitcase for long flights - this helps to eliminate that musty "airplane odor" and you'll have a "just washed" air to your clothes when you unpack.

Clothes Packing:
To help prevent creasing of clothing, roll up a small towel and place on the inside of where the garments will fold. Or roll your suites up instead of folding.

Child Saftey:
On the day of the trip or just before you leave, use a Polaroid camera and take photos of each child in your party. Keep the pictures with you at all times. If you become separated from your child, you will have a photo of what your child looks like right then, that day.

Luggage:
Mark every piece of luggage inside and outside with your last name and first initial only. Do not use a title [Ms.] Do not put your home address or destination address on the luggage unless your destination is a hotel or resort.

Packing Tip:
When you are traveling as a couple, each of you should put one complete outfit in the other's suitcase in case one suitcase is delayed or lost. It is also a good idea to carry a change of underwear and socks in your carry-on.

Fragrance Tip:
Instead of lugging bulky, breakable perfume bottles, soak some cotton balls in your favorite scent and stuff them into empty film canisters. The airtight canisters keep the fragrance fresh!

Forgot Night Light:
Wish you had a nightlight in that strange hotel room? You don't have to pack one. Before you go to bed, turn on the bathroom light, then shut the bathroom door.

Wet Clothes:
To get wet clothes dry overnight, hang them on a coat hanger and hang them in the bathroom - Leave the light on.

Wet Clothes:
You can cut your clothing drying time in half. Roll the wet laundry in a towel, push down hard on the roll, and your washed item is partly dry.

Pepto Bismol:
When traveling to areas that are pron to diarhea, take two teaspoons of Pepto Bismol before each meal and the chances of you getting diarrhea are reduced.

Cuts and Scrapes:
Be sure to pack an effective topical antibiotic cream. The smallest scratch or insect bite can quickly become infected. Try "Bactriban" or "Polysporin". To prevent ringworm, the most effective product is "Nizoral" - sold over the counter as an anti-dandruff shampoo.

Shower Water:
Most people know to ask for unopened bottled water when traveling, but may not realize that it's all too easy to get sick from ingesting water while showering. The solution: Keep mouthwash in your mouth while showering.

Bottled Water:
In a restaurant, ask for a bottle of water unopened. Have them open it at the table, and you can be sure you won't get local water, bottled. This will also tell you that they use bottled water to cook and clean with.

Camera Tips:
Always keep your film, tape, or computer disks out of the sun. Carry an extra supply of batteries, and be prepared to turn on your camera, camcorder, or laptop to prove to security personnel that the device is real. Always ask for hand inspection of film, which becomes clouded after successive exposures to airport X-ray machines, and keep videotapes and computer disks away from metal detectors.

Choosing a car-rental agency:
When choosing a car-rental agency, ask your travel agent about a company's customer-service record. How has the company responded to late plane arrivals and vehicle mishaps? Are there often lines at the rental counter? If you're traveling during a holiday period, does a confirmed reservation guarantee you a car?

Planning your trip with kids:
Get your kids actively involved in planning your trip from the very beginning -- that way older kids have a stake in making it work and you have a chance to allay younger kids' natural wariness of the unknown. Besides, it's fun.

Preparation for Your Trip:
Start Early. If a passport is required for you to enter the country where you are planning to travel, apply for it as soon as possible.

Learn about the countries you plan to visit. Before departing, read up on the culture and people for the places you will travel.

As you travel, keep abreast of local news coverage. If you are in an area experiencing civil unrest or a natural disaster, if you will be staying more than two weeks in an area, or if you are going to a place where communications are poor, you are encouraged to register with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. Registration takes only a few moments, and it may be invaluable in case of an emergency. Remember to leave a detailed itinerary and the numbers of your passport or other citizenship documents with a friend or relative in the United States.

For up-to-date travel information on any country in the world that you plan to visit, obtain the Department of State's Consular Information Sheet. This covers topics such as entry regulations, the crime and security situation, drug penalties, and location of the nearest U.S. embassy, consulate or consular agency.

The Department also issues Travel Warnings and Public Announcements. A Travel Warning advises travelers not to go to a country because of dangerous conditions and/or U.S. government's ability to assist a U.S. citizen in distress there is severely limited. A Public Announcement is issued as a means to disseminate information quickly about relatively short-term and/or trans-national conditions which would pose significant risks to the security of American travelers.

Entry and Exit Requirements:
Entering: Every island in the Caribbean has its own entry requirements. Most countries allow you to visit for up to two or three months if you show proof of U.S. citizenship and a return or onward ticket. Some countries, however, require that you have a valid passport. If you are arriving from an area infected with yellow fever, many Caribbean countries require you to have a certificate of vaccination against yellow fever. Some countries have an airport departure tax of up to $25. For authoritative information on a country's entry and exit requirements and on its customs and currency regulations, contact its embassy, consulate, or tourist office in the United States.

Returning - Caution! Make certain that you can return to the United States with the proof of citizenship that you take with you. Although some Caribbean countries may allow you to enter with only a birth certificate, U.S. Immigration requires that you document both your U.S. citizenship and identity when you reenter the United States.

The best document to prove your U.S. citizenship is a valid U.S. passport. Other documents of U.S. citizenship include an expired U.S. passport, a certified copy of your birth certificate, a Certificate of Naturalization , a Certificate of Citizenship , or a Report of Birth Abroad of a U.S. Citizen.

To prove your identity, either a valid driver's license or a government identification card that includes a photo or a physical description is acceptable.

If you lose or have your U.S. passport stolen while overseas, report it immediately to the local police and the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. A lost or stolen birth certificate or driver's license cannot be replaced outside the United States. There are several countries, most notably Barbados, the Dominican Republic, Grenada, Haiti, and Jamaica, where airlines have consistently refused to board American citizens with insufficient proof of U.S. citizenship. The resulting delays can be inconvenient as well as expensive.
- Travel Insurance:
  Travel insurance is the best way to protect yourself against financial loss. The most useful plan is a comprehensive policy that includes coverage for trip cancellation and interruption, default, trip delay, and medical expenses (with a waiver for preexisting conditions).
  
  Without insurance, you will lose all or most of your money if you cancel your trip or have to cut it short, regardless of the reason. Default insurance covers you if your tour operator, airline, or cruise line goes out of business. Trip-delay covers unforeseen expenses that you may incur due to bad weather or mechanical delays. Study the fine print when comparing policies.
  
  For overseas travel, one of the most important components of travel insurance is its medical coverage. Supplemental health insurance will pick up the cost of your medical bills should you get sick or injured while traveling.
  
  U.S. residents should note that Medicare generally does not cover health-care costs outside the United States, nor do many privately issued policies.
  
  Residents of the United Kingdom can buy an annual travel-insurance policy valid for most vacations taken during the year in which the coverage is purchased.
  
  If you are pregnant or have a pre-existing condition, make sure you're covered.
  
  Always buy travel insurance directly from an insurance company or agent; if you buy it from a cruise line, airline, or tour operator that goes out of business, you probably will not be covered for the agency or operator's default, a major risk. Before you make any purchase, review your existing health and home-owner's policies to find out whether they cover expenses incurred while traveling.
- Precaution Drugs:
  Take extra precautions. In your carry-on luggage bring an extra pair of eyeglasses or contact lenses and enough of any medication you take to last the entire trip. You may also want your doctor to write a spare prescription using the drug's generic name, since brand names may vary from country to country. Never put prescription drugs or valuables in luggage to be checked. To avoid customs delays, carry medications in their original packaging. And don't forget to copy down and carry addresses of offices that handle refunds of lost traveler's checks.
- Bag it:
  Bag it. Plastic bags -- for everything from toiletries to shoes to aerosol cans -- have prevented many a suitcase fiasco.
- Do the twistie:
  Do the twistie. Use garbage-bag ties to secure the zips (as well as locks) on your luggage. This measure annoys and may deter a potential thief.
- Safe Shower:
  When entering a hotel room for the first time, run the shower for a few minutes, without you being in the room. This will get rid of any build-up of spores that cause Legionaries disease.
- Basic Emergancy Kit:
  Band-aids, antibiotic ointment, tweezers, nail clippers (for some reason we think our nails grow faster down there???), tylenol, anti-bacterial wipes.
- Beach Towels:
  If you are staying at a small hotel you'll need to bring your own. Larger resort provide them. You may also want to bring a couple of washcloths if you're staying at a small hotel, they don't always have them.
- Toiletries:
  Toothpaste, tooth brush, shampoo, deodorant, bring your own bar of soap and make-up.
- Large Ziplock Bags:
  Ziplock bags are great for dirty clothes or wet suits. I also use them for cameras, film amd whatever else I don't want sand in.

Hello Travelers!

I don't know about you, but I am becoming more and more adept at fitting ALL of my belongings needed for a 2-7 day vacation in just one carry-on sized piece of luggage! The real trick is being sure you are in compliance with all of the new rules & regs (which keep changing!) deemed necessary by the TSA and the individual airlines. These days, it's also very important that you check the weight and size limits on your Carry-On Baggage Allowance (in addition to TSA rules below), as the airlines are making lots of changes in that department as well, sometimes it even varies based on the aircraft the airline is using on that particular flight.

Below are some helpful tips provided by the TSA. Of course, as your friendly neighborhood travel agent, I am happy to help answer any questions you may have as well, so feel free to use me as another resource!

Carry-On Baggage

Carry-on baggage is a small piece of luggage you take onboard the airplane with you. You are allowed one carry-on in addition to one personal item such as a laptop computer, purse, small backpack, briefcase, or camera case.

TSA will screen any "Carry-on" baggage that will fit through the x-ray machine; however, it is up to each individual air carrier as to whether the baggage fits the size restrictions for your flight. Please check with the air carrier prior to proceeding through the security checkpoints.

Always keep your belongings "in sight". You are responsible for your property as it proceeds through the screening process.

Make Your Trip Better Using 3-1-1

TSA and our security partners conducted extensive explosives testing since August 10, 2006 and determined that liquids, aerosols and gels, in limited quantities, are safe to bring aboard an aircraft. The one bag limit per traveler limits the total amount each traveler can bring. Consolidating the bottles into one bag and X-raying them separately from the carry-on bag enables security officers to quickly clear the items.

3-1-1 for carry-ons = 3.4 ounce (100ml) bottle or less (by volume) ; 1 quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag; 1 bag per passenger placed in screening bin. One-quart bag per person limits the total liquid volume each traveler can bring. 3.4 ounce (100ml) container size is a security measure.

Be prepared. Each time TSA searches a carry-on it slows down the line. Practicing 3-1-1 will ensure a faster and easier checkpoint experience.

3-1-1 is for short trips. If in doubt, put your liquids in checked luggage.

Declare larger liquids. Medications, baby formula and food, and breast milk are allowed in reasonable quantities exceeding three ounces and are not required to be in the zip-top bag. Declare these items for inspection at the checkpoint.

Checked Baggage

Checked baggage is luggage you check in at the ticket counter or curbside. It will not be accessible during your flight. Please refrain from locking your checked baggage or use a TSA Accepted & Recognized Lock. TSA is mandated by Federal law to screen 100% of checked baggage. If your baggage alarms and TSA cannot gain access to your checked bag, unrecognized locks may be broken. TSA will not reimburse passengers for unrecognized locks broken as a result of the security screening process.

DO NOT pack the following items in your checked baggage:

Jewelry
Cash
Laptop computers
Electronics
Fragile items (no matter how they are protected)

Below are a number of tips for packing your checked baggage:

Don't put film in your checked baggage, as the screening equipment will damage it.
Pack shoes, boots, sneakers, and other footwear on top of other contents in your luggage.
Avoid over packing your bag so that the screener will be able to easily reseal your bag if it is opened for inspection. If possible, spread your contents over several bags. Check with your airline or travel agent for maximum weight limitations.
Avoid packing food and drink items in checked baggage.
Don't stack piles of books or documents on top of each other; spread them out within your baggage.
The following general packing tips apply to both carry-on and checked baggage:
Do NOT pack or bring prohibited items to the airport.
Put all undeveloped film and cameras with film in your carry-on baggage. If your bag will pass through the X-ray machine more than five (5) times ask for a hand inspection to prevent damage.
LABEL your laptop computer. Tape a business card or other identifying information beneath your laptop to avoid loss or the accidental "exchange" by other passengers.
Check ahead of time with your airline or travel agent to determine the airline's baggage policy, including number of pieces you can bring and size and weight limitations.
Carry-on baggage is limited to one carry-on bag plus one personal item. Personal items include laptops, purses, small backpacks, briefcases, or camera cases. Remember, 1+1.
Don't forget to place identification tags with your name, address and phone number on all of your baggage, including your laptop computer. It is a good idea to place an identification tag inside your baggage as well.
Avoid over packing so that your articles don't spill out if your bag is opened for inspection.
Think carefully about the personal items you place in your carry-on baggage. The screeners may have to open your bag and examine its contents.
Place your personal belongings in clear plastic bags to reduce the chance that a TSA screener will have to handle them.
Wait to wrap your gifts. Be aware that wrapped gifts may need to be opened for inspection.

Hello and Happy Friday Everyone!

Seeing as nearly every quote request the past couple weeks has been for Summer travel and I am noticing the pricing is going up fast!!! The Merrie Monarch and His Festival of Hula

Ask someone what comes to mind when they think of Hawaii and odds are they will mention hula. Originally a society with no written language, the Hawaiians used hula with its dance, chants and songs as a primary means by which to communicate and teach legends, stories of war and of love. The hula paid homage to their gods through whom everything is connected. It was for this very fact though that hula almost disappeared when missionaries banned it due to the thought that the hula was sacrilegious. It was King David Kalakaua also known as the "Merrie Monarch" for his love of entertainment that revived hula and opened the once male-only dance to women in 1883 at his coronation ceremony.

Today, hula and the "Merrie Monarch" are honored in the world’s most prestigious hula competition, the Merrie Monarch Festival held once yearly in Hilo, Hawaii. 2010 marks the 47th year of the festival and the week of April 4 - 10 will be filled with events culminating with the 3-day competition from Thursday, April 8 with halau (groups) participating from around the world.

"With literally hundreds of ships and itineraries from which to choose, there truly is a cruise for everyone," said ASTA President and Chair Chris Russo. "But selecting the right cruise involves more than just picking your cabin; there are numerous factors to consider. It's not a one-size-fits-all vacation. Working with a travel consultant who specializes in cruises can make all the difference, ensuring that your first time on the high seas won't be your last."

To book the perfect cruise, simply follow these helpful guidelines:

Chart your course! Your first task is to decide where you want to go and for how long. Cruises offer everything from one- or two-night excursions to journeys that take you around the world in 100 days. Three-day weekend, four-day midweek, week and two-week cruises are the most popular. Your ASTA travel consultant will work with you to find an itinerary and ship to meet your desires and budget.
Cabin with a view. If you plan to spend significant time in your cabin, choose the biggest room you can afford. Standard cabins have twin beds, which can usually be converted into a queen-sized bed, while bunk beds in other rooms cannot be converted. If you are booking a cabin with windows, check with a travel consultant to ensure your view is not obstructed by equipment such as a lifeboat.
Cruise specialists - your new best friend. For the most thorough advice and the best deals, find a cruise specialist. Travel consultants are often certified cruise specialists, and they know which low Internet offers to avoid and which ports of call can make a great cruise unforgettable.
Travel insurance - better safe than sorry. Travel insurance is a small price to pay for peace of mind. A policy is not only for trip cancellations but also can cover missed connections, lost or delayed baggage, emergency medical and dental expenses and emergency legal assistance. Trip cancellation and interruption insurance will cover you from the time that you purchase your cruise until you return from the trip. Hello again! Did you know there was such a thing as All Inclusive Cruising? For those of you who cruise often, on mass market cruise lines (such as Princess, Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Holland America Line, etc.) you are used to the standard inclusions such as meals, coffee/tea & also juices with breakfast, your accommodations, some activities and entertainment being part of your cruise fare. 1~ Use a Travel Agent / Travel agents can have the inside scoop on unadvertised discounts, package deals, and a range of itinerary options. Agents are also one-stop shopping resources for air, car, and hotel reservations. They also offer peace of mind, adding immense security to your trip should your travel plans go awry.

2~ Create a Money Plan / Know your bank's travel policies on withdrawls, credit card limits, and bank account balances. Also consider the mix of cash, travelers checks, and credit cards you're taking. If you're visiting a remote destination, pack extra cash and travelers checks. On the other hand, if ATMs will plentiful (often the case in popular tourist spots), take less cash to limit your liability, and withdraw money as needed. Just remember that there will be ATM conversion surcharges.

Just returned for Eastern Caribbean Cruise on Carnival Destiny

Hello Folks! Well, I had (and hopefully my group as well) a great time cruising the Caribbean last week aboard Carnival Destiny. The seas were smooth as glass and the weather was great except for a sprinkle in Nassau at the beginning which was expected per the weather forecast read before we left home. I don't think I need to eat again until, well, at least Thursday (can't miss Turkey dinner!)

The ship, which, mind you is not a new one by any means, was in very good shape and seemed to hum along like clockwork with employees and schedules working just as they should. One minor problem (for an experienced travel with a good attitude) that we had a bit of engine trouble and caused us to miss one port and double back to a previous one. Everyone still enjoyed themselves I thing and we will consider it a sign that we need to cruise again to see our missed port of Grand Turk! But just think of how we have had two opportunities to see Nassau now! Half Moon Cay, Carnival/Holland America's Private Island was heavenly as I had remembered from a previous trip - WOW is all you can say when you see this pristine island and beach with its powdery beaches and crystal clear warm water...true paradise! We had five of our cabins lined up together and I had the cabin steward open the balcony dividers so we had a huge 50+foot long balcony to all enjoy ~ that was a treat & I think it made things easier for our cabin steward as well!

Flying is certainly an adventure as well these days, again a recommendation to pack an extra dose of patience! We were delayed due to mechanical issue & change of aircraft in Miami for our flight home but American took care of it as quickly as possible pulling over a "spare" aircraft very close to our original gate and getting us underway as quick as possible. Nobody likes to get home late, but when you choose to make the best of it, time truly seems to pass more quickly!

It was great to see our Limo driver waiting patiently for our delayed flight at the baggage claim area when we arrived. It truly makes your trip many times better when someone else handles your transportation to and from the airport. I strongly recommend you "splurge" and treat yourself to private home/airport transfers if you get the opportunity. It can make all the difference in how you feel at the beginning and end of your vacation! It can be quite reasonable as well, even more so if you are sharing with others like we did for a 10 passenger limousine to and from the Phoenix airport.

I am already looking forward to the next cruise! I am working on a 4 Night cruise from San Diego to Cabo for October of 2010 on Carnival Spirit (info on my blog of course!). Please let me know ASAP if you are interested!

Everyone loves Christmas Candy! Use your Apothecary Jars of miscellaneous size and shape. Add different festive colors and varieties of Holiday Candies, then place Votives and some different Ornaments like Glass or Tin Balls around for a very Sweet looking display!

Here is a Simple and Elegant looking Display or Centerpiece using just a few things you may have already around the house or pick up quickly while doing your holiday shopping! Take a large Cylinder and place a Pillar candle in the center. Place smaller Cylinders around it with Votives in the center as well. Tuck Fresh Cranberries in each Cylinder and light the candles for a dramatic effect! You can also add Sliced Oranges, Nuts, Cloves or Cinnamon.

How early should I plan my Vacation or Honeymoon?

This is one of the questions I get asked all the time, and usually people are surprised to hear the answer!

One thing people don't generally realize is that the tour operators/cruise lines/hotels and sometimes even airlines; would love to have your money (or commitment to spend money such as a credit card guarantee on a hotel) now and put rates out very far in advance to prove it!

With Cruises you generally should book as soon/far in advance as possible. Yes, if the schedule/cruise/date you want is out there to book, even if its 18 months away, NOW is the time to make your deposit and get your spot reserved! An experienced and customer service oriented Travel Consultant would be able to check periodically between your deposit and final payment dates to see if rates had been reduced and if any sales applicable to your booking have come out and reprice your cruise in most cases (at no cost, unless your fare is a rare case) to the lower fare without you having to do a thing! However, I'd say 80% of the time, when you booked that cruise 18months in advance, you did get the lowest rate they have or will have out there so you Win either way!

With Hotels (this includes resorts and packages including hotels/cars) and even Car Rentals, they want your commitment right now so they are generally willing to put out the lowest fares far in advance as well. They do not always have their rates/availability out much more than 10-14 months in advance of departure dates, but as long as you are not reserving a rate involving a penalty, why not lock in those great rates by guaranteeing your rate/space with a credit card/deposit or reservation. If a special comes out that is better than what you have reserved, of course your Travel Consultant can easily re-book you to that rate, so book as early as possible!

Now, airfare is always tricky - but the Airlines really want to keep you guessing! Generally flights are available to book about 10 months prior to your departure date. If there is a fare you are comfortable with thats fits your budget, then jump on it! The latest you would want to book flights is about 2-3 months prior to departure, increase that by another 2-3 months to approx 5-6 months prior if its during a Peak Travel Time (Such as Spring Break, The Holidays, Thanksgiving etc). There are some time frames throughout the year when the airlines seem to put out some pretty good fares. One is after summer break and before Thanksgiving (usually there are sales focusing on the travel time about 2 weeks Before Christmas/New years or about 2 weeks after, on into early spring). Then, there is generally another sale somewhere in the first 2 months of the year focusing into summer time frame. Of course, the airlines as I said love to keep us guessing, so my advice is to never "count on" a sale. If there is a fare out that feels "good" to you; book it and be glad it's taken care of! A little note; Airlines do not tend to be so friendly about rebooking to a lower fare IF one became available for your flights. In most cases, they will charge you a nice re-issue fee of $50-150 per person to do so, so it would have to be a much lower price to be worth the fee (Southwest is the only exception).

Hek there folks - Today was a good day!

First, I am only 5 & 1/2 working days away from having 19 days off in a row (I plan to travel to Oceanside, California; Sedona, AZ & Portland, Oregon during that time). YAY!

Second, I had more great feedback from some clients of mine on a Baltic Cruise on Holland America Line this past week. They had a fabulous time and enjoyed their pre-cruise stay I arranged for them in Copenhagen as well. I'm looking foreward to their pictures they said they'd share. Another great success and several hours of hard work paid off ;-)

Lots of folks taking Alaska cruises this summer too...I'm looking forward to hearing how the like their trips.
